1813 O.106 Capped Bust Half Dollar PCGS AU58 CAC, Very Early Die State
CAC approved, and as crisp, crusty and magnificent as you are likely to find...well, at less than the MS63 level! I guess there's a touch of rub, but I think PCGS was playing it safe there. The coin is of outstanding quality and the eye appeal...wow. And, it's a very early die state. 13-106's tend to come from dies that were much less than crisp and sharp. Most of these don't have full dentils, like we see here. Most don't display sharp - razor sharp - hair curls, like we see here. Yes, there is unevenness to the strike - the bust tip and areas opposite that on the reverse - are softly defined. But that is simply evidence of the challenges faced by the early mint to produce truly well made coins. They tried hard, I fully believe, but they had real limitations.
