1819 O.113 Small Date Capped Bust Half Dollar PCGS AU55 CAC, ex. Davignon, Midwest collection
CAC approved, and formerly in the collection of Keith Davignon, thence to the Midwest Collection via Sheridan Downey MBS 38, lot 29. In January 2014, SD described this coin thus (in part), "Cakey luster in the fields belies the conservative grade. There is but a trace of friction on the portrait. Antique grey toning will appeal to those in search of original pieces with a patina of "grey dirt." The surfaces are simply marvelous." He further noted that Keith bought the coin raw at the Bay State coin show (Boston) in April 1996, and sent it to NGC. They encapsulated it as AU58. Keith subsequently crossed it to this holder, and CAC beaned it. I cannot add anything to Sheridan's great description, and nothing has changed! A splendid, original coin. This is Die State 113.1, per the BHNC's new die state handbook, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836", which is a very modest cost item, available right here on our website.
