A very rare Bust half dollar Mint Error, though not expertly described by NGC. They have called this a "Collar Break", which is the right idea, but...not so much. There wasn't actually a close collar used in striking any Lettered Edge, Capped Bust halves. The edge was lettered in a separate operation using bar dies mounted in the Castaing machine. Here, one of the bar dies had a break, after the L in HALF, and mostly covering the F. I've collected, dealt in and studied Bust half dollars since 1984, and have never seen this before. The coin happens to be of outstanding quality, very choice, totally original and is CAC approved as well. A truly one-of-a-kind item as far as I know. The edge pictures start with the coin flat, obverse up, and progress to ever higher angles. The last two are shown reverse up. This is Die State 112.x per the BHNC's new die state handbook, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836", which is a very modest cost item, available right here on our website.
