Here is a really rare coin. First is the quality. This coin is very impressive, with it's fully prooflike obverse, and it's wonderfully frosty reverse. Then there is the exceptionally beautiful ring of golden toning, likely from storage in an old coin album or board, that perfectly frames the whole. The originality is intact and the luster is essentially full. The surfaces are very smooth, and free of even trivial issues. Regarding the rarity, PCGS has identified and encapsulated a total of 13 of these in all grades, from G4 thru AU58, with only 5 of those being XF or better. This is the only AU that has a public auction sale record (Stack's Bowers, 12/2013:1320), and it has been in a private collection since that time, having recently been replaced by an AU58 via a private transaction. The only other public sale records I can find are of a dark, fairly rough VF30 with a severe rim ding below the date that sold twice in the past nearly 4 years, with a solid price increase. The variety is very cool, very rare, and not often available. Opportunity knocks!
