CAC approved. A wonderfully pleasing and original example of this much better die variety. Overton called both the O.101 and this O.102 overdates, and while series experts now generally believe the 101 is not an overdate, the jury hasn't yet returned a unanimous verdict on this variety. So, this might be the only true overdated 1822 half dollar die. On close examination, there is clearly a vertical something under the second 2, and the remnants of an earlier 1 is the most likely explanation. Our example is extraordinarily lustrous for a mere VF30, well struck, original and beautifully toned. This is a toughie! This is Die State 102.3, per the BHNC's new die state handbook, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836", which is a very modest cost item, available right here on our website.
