Robinson S. Brown was a serious Large cent collector by die variety, and he had the means to do that thanks to his job...Chairman of the Board of Brown-Forman Distilling Company. Relatively few people knew that he also collected Bust half dollars by Overton variety. This is one of those coins. When Sheridan Downey sold Brown's coins in the 1990's, this particular coin was purchased by another notable name...Don Parsley...who we know as the editor of the more recent editions of the Overton book (Don was Al Overton's son-in-law, and he and his wife inherited the collection on Al's death). The coin is lovely - original, beautifully toned in antique golden gray with iridescent highlights, and is alive with luster. There are some small marks clustered at the central obverse, otherwise this coin is fully choice. This is Die State 116.1, per the BHNC's new die state handbook, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836", which is a very modest cost item, available right here on our website.
