Leonard Elton Dosier was famous among the first generation of BHNC members for his cherry-picking ability as well as his selfless desire to place those cherrypicked coins with collectors who needed them. He wasn't interested in profit, thus he would send a coin to a guy who needed it with a request for his original purchase price, plus postage. That practice earned him the nickname Scattergood, since he scattered the good ones all over. He was also famous for his strict grading (he would probably correct that to "proper" grading). He graded this coin EF when he bought it, and then later decided it was ok to differentiate between 40 and 45, thus this became a 40 in his eyes. The surface quality, underlying luster and incredibly pretty yet subtle envelope tone give this coin fabulous eye appeal. PCGS thought better of it, and you will too. With Elton's kraft envelope.
This is Die State 102.1, per the BHNC's new die state handbook, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836", which is a very modest cost item, available right here on our website. Please see our Numismatic Literature section, and get your copy today!
