This marriage is well known for rather blunt central strikes, and that's what we see here. To those not well versed in open collar coins, and specific die variety tendencies as well, it may look like wear. It isn't. We need to rely on luster more than apparent wear to grade this coin properly. And, this is AU luster all the way. My grade is AU50, and the coin is quite choice for that grade...original, beautifully toned and without distractions. Of additional interest, there are adjustment marks seen thru the central reverse, which is not something we generally see this late. But here we see them because they were not struck out...see my first comment about the strikes on this variety being blunt in the centers! This is Die State 101.2, per the BHNC's new die state handbook, "Die State Progressions of the Capped Bust Half Dollar Die Varieties 1807-1836", which is a very modest cost item, available right here on our website.
